Capital Investment Networks first ever Pitch & Mix event that was on board a 78-foot yacht took place Thursday August 29. Patrons set off on a round trip shuttle to Nanaimo, spent 4 hours sailing, and were privy to 3 exciting and well vetted startup pitches at the intimate and unique setting on board Jordan Schley’s family boat.
Once guests boarded the yacht they enjoyed appies, a cheese bar, a quality local summer wine selection, and were also treated to handcrafted cocktails by E:Ne restaurant.
As guests sailed out of Nanaimo and by the lush surrounding islands, they cycled in groups to hear 15 minute quick pitches from VINN, Open Ocean Robotics, and Certn. The small group sizes along with the up close and personal backdrop gave investors a rare and exclusive chance to ask and have questions answered in detail. Each startup has already proved compelling to many prospects and has gained impressive traction:
VINN – Working at the intersection of technology and automotive retail, VINN aims to revolutionize the automotive retail model by connecting buyers and dealerships through an online platform.
Open Ocean Robotics – A cleantech solution to collecting ocean data. Wind and solar powered autonomous boats providing real time information to protect our oceans.
Certn – Certn makes it easier for employers, landlords, and others to screen and evaluate people. Using machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), they aim to create the most comprehensive and predictive applicant profiles available.
After the pitches and questions there was plenty of time for mingling. The shuttle stopped for dinner at Unsworth Vineyards in Cobble Hill on the way back to Victoria. Guests enjoyed local wine and a family style dinner outdoors at the farm to table style restaurant.
Thank you to everyone who made the trip from the mainland and to our local Victorian attendees as well as Quality Foods, E:Ne, and the Schley family for sponsoring the event. A special thanks to Osler for being the lead sponsor; your support is greatly appreciated.
